A blog reader asked us a great question about how plays are generated in Powerball, and we want to share the answer here because it involves a common misconception.
The reader wondered if plays in the game are generated by one central computer system that controls the entire game or whether they come from the lottery terminal at your local store.
If you guessed there is a centralized computer system behind Powerball you are … wrong.
The plays in Powerball are, in fact, generated by the terminal at your local store. Each lottery in the Powerball game (there currently are 31) has its own separate computer system, so there is no “central computer” in Powerball. That’s one of the reasons that the game’s jackpots can be (and have been) split amongst multiple winners. Duplicate plays are a key feature in Powerball’s design
