All the coverage about the 23-year-old South Dakota rancher who hit a $232.1 million Powerball jackpot this month has sparked questions about the youngest Powerball jackpot winner thus far. An Iowa winner has been in the running, but he’s recently been eclipsed.
Much of the answer is determined by the legal age at which you can buy lottery tickets in each state. In Iowa, you have to be at least 21 years old to buy lottery tickets, but in most other U.S. states, that legal buying age is 18.
Tim Schultz of Des Moines (that's him in the photo above) is one of the youngest Powerball jackpot winners. He was just 21 when he won a $28 million jackpot in February 1999. But he was recently beat out by a 19-year-old South Carolina man who won a $35.3 million Powerball jackpot in May 2008!
We think that South Carolina man is the youngest Powerball jackpot winner so far, but you never know, that could change with the next drawing!
