Just for one night, Iowa may have been the luckiest place on earth!
In Wednesday night’s lotto drawings, Iowa Lottery players won a $202.1 million Powerball® jackpot,
a $1 million Powerball prize, a $10,000 Powerball prize AND a top prize in Iowa’s $100,000 Cash Game. Whew!
So you’ve got your tickets out and you’re checking them, right? (hint, hint…) As our CEO Terry Rich said this morning, if there’s ever a time to double-check your tickets, this is it!!
Here’s the 411 on the winning tickets:
• The jackpot-winning ticket matched all six numbers selected in Wednesday’s Powerball drawing to win the big prize. The jackpot winner was purchased at: Casey’s General Store, 1455 Grant St. in Bondurant.
• The $1 million-winning ticket came close to having a share of the jackpot, matching the first five numbers but missing the Powerball. That ticket was purchased at another Casey’s location, at 130 W. Evans St. in Williamsburg.
• The $10,000-winning ticket also was just one number away from having a share of the jackpot. That ticket matched four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. It was purchased at the Big 10 Mart, 1225 Boyson Road in Hiawatha.
The winning numbers in Wednesday’s Powerball drawing were: 13-26-39-41-42 and
Powerball 10.
• And, the top prize-winning ticket in Iowa’s $100,000 Cash Game was purchased at Hy-Vee Gas, 2632 Ave. L in Fort Madison.
The winning numbers in Wednesday’s drawing of the $100,000 Cash Game were: 2-6-18-25-33.
Powerball jackpot winners can choose to receive their prizes in annuitized payments over time or as a one-time, lump-sum payment. If the winner(s) chooses the annuity option for Wednesday’s jackpot, it will be made in 30 payments over 30 years totaling $202.1 million before taxes, with the annual amount increasing over time to accommodate for inflation. If the winner(s) chooses the cash option, he or she will receive about $129.8 million before taxes.

As always, I’ll give this reminder: We encourage our winners – especially jackpot winners - to consult a financial advisor or lawyer before coming forward to claim a large prize. For our jackpot winner, this truly is a life-changing amount of money and we want our winners to have all the information they’ll need as they make their decisions. Anyone holding a winning ticket should sign it right away if they haven’t already done so and keep it in a secure place until they present it to claim the jackpot.
Lottery prizes of more than $250,000 won in Iowa must be claimed at the lottery’s headquarters at 2323 Grand Ave. in Des Moines. Prizes of $250,000 and under may be claimed at headquarters or one of our five other regional offices around the state in Cedar Rapids, Mason City, Storm Lake and Council Bluffs. If the winner or winners have questions before claiming the prize, they’re welcome to contact the lottery at 515-725-7900.
Iowa Lottery players now have won eight Powerball jackpots overall, and 10 prizes of at least $1 million so far this year alone.
Iowa’s previous Powerball jackpot winners are:
• The Shipping 20, a group of co-workers from Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids, won a $241 million jackpot in June 2012.
• Tim and Kellie Guderian of Fort Dodge, who claimed a $200.8 million jackpot in October 2006.
• Hugh Hawkins of Des Moines, who won a $113.2 million jackpot in December 2005.
• Jacquelyn Moore of Omaha, Neb., who won a $14.4 million jackpot in October 2004 (she bought her ticket at a convenience store in Carter Lake in western Iowa).
• The Larry Hasken family of Sabula, who claimed a $31.8 million jackpot in January 2000.
• Tim Schultz of Des Moines, who won a $28 million jackpot in February 1999.
• Ed Brown of Washington, who split a $10.4 million jackpot with a Missouri woman in December 1992.
We’re elated to see another jackpot winner here in Iowa and we can’t wait to meet all of our winners, whoever they are. Check your tickets now if you haven’t already!
