There’s a new website you can use to help fight Internet scams. It’s called IC3, or Internet Crime Complaint Center, and it’s a partnership between the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center.
If you believe you’ve been the victim of a scam online, you should first contact your local law-enforcement agency. But the IC3 is another contact for you to make. Analysts review and research the complaints made to the site, sending out information to local, state, federal or international law enforcement as appropriate.
You’ll be asked for these details when you file a complaint with the site:
• Your name, mailing address and telephone number
• Name, address and telephone number of the individual or business that defrauded you
• Website and email address of the individual or business that defrauded you
• Specific details about how you were defrauded
• Any other relevant information necessary to support your complaint.
Once you’ve filed your complaint, you’ll get an email back from the IC3 with an I.D. and password. You can use that information to view your report and add to it later if needed.
By working together, hopefully we can all better protect ourselves and make a difference in the fight against crime.
