Just a note in case you’ve wondered about it: Lottery tickets don’t hold up well in the microwave.
A player emailed us this week after experiencing that for herself firsthand. It seems she bought some lotto tickets and put them in a birthday card. After sealing the envelope, she realized she’d put the tickets in the wrong card, so she said she tried to steam open the envelope by putting it in the microwave. You can guess what happened: When she took the card out of the microwave, the lotto tickets inside had turned completely black.
She wondered if there was anything we could do to see if any of the tickets had won a prize. We said she’s welcome to send us a photo of them or the tickets themselves and we’ll see if there is anything that can be read on them. But if the front of a ticket is entirely black, there won’t be any identifying details we can use to help.
Tickets in our lotto games are printed on what is called thermal paper. Heat is used to print the numbers and logos on the front of the tickets you buy. If you apply heat to an entire ticket, as it sounds like happened in this case, the whole surface will turn black.
We keep warnings about that very thing on the back of our tickets. In the information there, you’ll find this statement: “Excessive heat or light will damage tickets.” We’ve also included four warning symbols (shown in the photo above) reminding people not to deface or iron their tickets, avoid heat and keep them dry.
So, here’s a friendly reminder to keep your lottery tickets in a cool, dry place.
Well, I also like playing lotteries, especially USA Lotteries. And ok, I will not microwave my tickets!:D
