A central Iowa man said the cold weather almost kept him at home, but at the last minute he decided to go out and buy Powerball tickets over the New Year’s weekend – and he won a $1 million prize.
George Dickerson of Colfax said he went out late on Dec. 30 and bought Powerball tickets for that night’s drawing. The next morning, a friend called him to say that someone in Colfax had won a $1 million prize. George said he immediately thought that he was the big winner. That’s because he has believed he would win the lottery since a flood in 2010 destroyed almost everything he and his family had.

This week marks the first time that the jackpots in Powerball and Mega Millions have topped the $400 million mark simultaneously. The Mega Millions jackpot stands at an estimated $450 million annuity ($281.2 million cash option) for tonight’s drawing, while the Powerball jackpot has climbed to an estimated $570 million annuity ($358.5 million lump-sum option) for tomorrow night’s drawing. Both jackpots now rank in the Top 15 overall for record U.S. lottery prizes.
