We got an interesting email from a player who wondered about the distribution of tickets in our Instaplay and scratch games – and specifically, whether we could go back and adjust where winning tickets are placed. The man wanted us to do that because he wasn’t happy with the results of the tickets he bought.
The short answer is that we definitely don’t and can’t do that. The random distribution of tickets in our games is a central security feature of the lottery. Not even we know which tickets will win prizes in our games, or where those tickets have been distributed.
There generally are more than a million tickets in one of our InstaPlay or scratch games. Tickets are distributed over time, and winning tickets are randomly distributed throughout the entire supply of tickets in a particular game, so they’re available in retail locations over time as the game is for sale.
As our new games roll out, it takes about a week for scratch tickets to be distributed to all stores across the state. Some stores prefer to sell through existing tickets before they begin selling something new, so sales volume is part of the picture.
