« We’re Down To The Final Days For An Unclaimed $1 Million Prize In Central Iowa | Main | Later This Spring, We’ll Give Away That $1 Million Unclaimed Prize »

April 12, 2019

Hi, Vicki. What you've described is not possible. Iowa law specifies that the money from lottery prizes that expire without being claimed in Iowa goes into the lottery's prize pools for future games and promotions. We consider it part of our commitment to our players: This money was won in Iowa and we'll give it away here in Iowa. We know that Iowa has faced some really challenging weather-related events this year, and folks in a large swath of our state are still finding their way through those difficulties. Maybe the buzz surrounding this unclaimed prize mystery can give us all a short break to think about something else – and then as Iowans, we’ll get back to work to ensure our state recovers. The Iowa Lottery will keep doing its best to raise proceeds to help with vital state causes right here at home.

I really feel that this money could be put to much better use by putting it into a fund to help all the Iowans that have been devastated by flooding this year. (Thankfully, I am not one of them.) Could this be done?

That's ALL part of our thought process, Sheri! We're working out the final details now and we'll have our announcement on Monday. Just know that the full $1 million will stay in Iowa to be given away to Iowa Lottery players.

So it will go to another game/? So those of us from iowa, can have a chance at it,,,maybe lots of us can win something

As the lottery’s vice president of external relations, I’m a member of the senior management team at the Iowa Lottery, where I’ve worked since 1999. I’ve spent my years at the lottery learning as much as I can about all the ins and outs of the lottery industry. I’ll put that knowledge to work here so I can share the behind-the-scenes details with you!
