After several health complications, a Des Moines couple is celebrating another kind of unexpected news: The husband won a $300,000 lottery prize!
David Martelli said that you never expect it, but yesterday it happened for them. Martelli claimed his prize at Iowa Lottery headquarters along with his wife, Amy.
David Martelli, 56, who is retired, said that the story started when he asked Amy to cash in a few tickets that had won small prizes and buy a couple more tickets. He said he specifically wanted a ticket in the “Win Big” scratch game.
David scratched off the ticket later that night. He said he noticed all the zeros in the prize amount, so he decided to surprise Amy with the news: He put his thumb over the prize amount and asked her if the numbers on the ticket matched. She said they did, and when he moved his thumb to reveal the prize amount, they both started to cry.
David and Amy are each in recovery from recent bouts with cancer and David said the situation makes them even more appreciative of this good luck.
Amy Martelli, 53, who works in health care, said the news is sinking in and becoming reality. She calls it a huge relief.
The couple plans to use the winnings to help their immediate family and invest for their retirement.
David claimed the seventh of 11 top prizes of $300,000 in the Win Big game.
