What Can I Do If I Think The Results Of My Ticket Are Wrong?

Here’s an example of a player who did the right thing by contacting us when he had questions about the results of his lottery ticket. Please feel free to follow his lead if you have questions of your own.

The man had his ticket checked at a local store, but didn’t think the clerk told him the right results for it. He called us with his questions, and we were able to help him determine the outcome of his ticket on his own. Then he used the lottery’s mobile app to double-check the details. The information that the clerk had initially shared was correct: His ticket was a nonwinner.

But there is a step in the process he didn’t use while he was at the store, and it could have helped. Here are the tools we make available to help you determine the results of your ticket if you’re ever having trouble figuring it out.

1. Receipts showing the ticket results. Every time a ticket is checked or cashed at a lottery terminal, a receipt for the player is automatically printed out. The receipt shows the results of the particular ticket involved, so be sure to ask for it! (That is the step in the process the player didn’t follow, and it could have helped.)
2. Self-checkers in retail locations. In nearly every business where Iowa Lottery tickets are sold, we have installed a self-checker. The device generally is off to the side from the lottery terminal, and as its name indicates, it allows you to check the results of your ticket on your own. The self-checker serves as both a convenience and security factor because you can quickly check your tickets on your own, and you don’t have to give them to someone else for that to be accomplished.
3. The lottery’s mobile app. If it isn’t convenient for you to go to a retail location, remember that you can use the Iowa Lottery’s mobile app to check your ticket results from wherever your smart device can connect online. Just scan the code on your tickets using the mobile app and you can check your ticket results on your own.
4. The lottery’s website. We have details about all our games available on our website, including the latest winning numbers and how-to-play instructions. Please feel free to use our website as another resource to double-check your ticket results.

A few other details for you to note: Receipts aren’t involved for pull-tab tickets and you won’t electronically check their results because they include "built-in receipts." Any prize won on a pull-tab is already printed beneath the tabs on the ticket so the amount involved is clear.

A lot of retail locations will automatically offer nonwinning tickets back to their customers. But if that doesn't happen, feel free to ask for your ticket back if you have any concerns.

Winning tickets are kept by the lottery and its retailers for record-keeping and security purposes, but nonwinning tickets can be returned to the customer.

That InstaPlay Jackpot Is Really Climbing! How Do I Track The Latest Amount?

With the Super 7s Progressive InstaPlay jackpot now topping $300,000 and the grand prizes in three other progressive games in five-digit territory, we’re hearing from players who want to know how they can track the latest amounts. There are a few different ways to do that, including by reviewing the totals printed on tickets in the games.

Every few minutes, the latest estimates for the jackpots in progressive InstaPlay games are updated on the lottery’s website, our mobile app, the lottery display screens in retail locations, and tickets printed in the games. I’ll emphasize that the figures are estimates, since the progressive jackpots increase with each ticket purchased statewide in that particular game. But we know you want the latest details possible, so we push out the updates!

The other question we’ve gotten today is whether the Super 7s Progressive jackpot is nearing a record. It still has a ways to go in that regard, so we’ll have to see what happens! The largest InstaPlay jackpot claimed to date was a $443,507 prize won in February. Brad Carter of Des Moines claimed that prize in the Super 7s Progressive game.

Such A Relatable Story: He Had To Check His Winning Ticket A BUNCH Of Times

This player’s story made me smile because it’s just so relatable. I think we can all imagine ourselves in his situation – and the disbelief we might have!

An eastern Iowa man who claimed a $10,000 prize at our Cedar Rapids office said that after he played his scratch ticket, he checked it and couldn’t believe what he was seeing. So, he scanned it three more times on the lottery’s mobile app and then went back into the gas station where he bought it to have them check it, too.

Louis Janecek II of Shellsburg said he just wanted to be sure! In the end, he realized he was the winner of a $10,000 prize. He claimed the eighth prize of $10,000 available in “The Perfect Gift” holiday scratch game.

Louis bought his winning ticket at Palo Mini Mart, 1204 First St. in Palo.

He said he plans to use his winnings to pay bills and buy Christmas gifts for his four children. Louis said his lottery win will just make everything that much nicer for the holidays.

Congratulations, Louis! I’m thinking that your big win may finally seem real by now!

Player Comments In the Middle Of The Night: Your Mobile App Isn’t Working

We’ve heard this week from some players who were having trouble in the middle of the night using the lottery’s mobile app to check their tickets or enter them into promotions. They told us that our app needed to be fixed.

But it’s actually working as it should. There’s just a period of time each night when the app is offline. If you try to use an app function that’s unavailable at that time, you’ll get a message asking you to try again later.

Many of the mobile app’s functions are tied into the lottery’s central gaming system, which links all Iowa Lottery terminals and self-service kiosks in real time along with some functions on the app.

As part of the lottery’s security procedures, the central gaming system is taken offline each night at midnight so that sales from the previous day can be balanced, all plays can be accounted for, and system updates can be made.

When the lottery’s statewide gaming system is offline, ticket checking doesn’t work on the mobile app because that function needs to access the gaming system. And lotto tickets (in Powerball®, Mega Millions®, etc.) can’t be entered into promotions at that time for the same reason.

Tickets in scratch games and InstaPlay games can be entered into promotions when the gaming system is offline because the process for those products is slightly different.

Some nights, the central gaming system is offline for less than half an hour. Other nights when bigger updates need to be made, the system may be offline for a few hours.

We choose to take the gaming system offline just after midnight knowing that’s when foot traffic is lighter in retail locations and there are fewer online visits to our website and mobile app.

So if you’re trying to use the lottery’s mobile app between about midnight and 3 a.m. and you get a message asking you to try again later, please do that. The app’s functions will be live again once the central gaming system is brought back up.

2 Big Wins On Scratch Tickets They Initially Didn’t Plan To Buy

Two big winners this month both have an unusual twist to their story: At first, neither of them planned to buy the ticket that delivered their moment of luck!

First up was Curt Smith of Des Moines, who claimed a $300,000 top prize in the “Win Big” scratch game. Curt said that after a long day of work, he went to a local store to buy a ticket in a scratch game he usually plays, but it was sold out. So, he said he decided to try Win Big.

Curt said he scratched the ticket in his car and couldn’t believe what he saw. He said he was a little shaky, so he ended up fumbling around with his phone before he finally was able to use the Iowa Lottery’s mobile app to scan the ticket and confirm that his eyes weren’t deceiving him.

After that, he said he just sat in the parking lot for about 10 minutes, in a bit of shock!

Curt, who’s 51 and works at a Des Moines tire plant, claimed his prize June 10 at lottery headquarters in Clive. He said that he and his wife, Anna, plan to use the winnings to buy a new home, pay off debt, and purchase a headstone for his mother’s gravesite.

The next business day after Curt got his prize, we met Michele Bautista of Waterloo, who claimed a $30,000 top prize in the “Bonus Crossword” scratch game. Michele said that when she asked for two tickets in the game at a local convenience store, the clerk accidentally grabbed three instead. She decided to buy them all.

She played the tickets when she got home and won her $30,000 prize on the third ticket. Michele, who’s 50 and manages a restaurant, said she was out of breath and called her son to come double-check the results. He confirmed that she really had won big!

Michele said she plans to save most of her winnings, but will use some of the money to fly her mom from California to Iowa for a visit.

THIS Is How You Update Your Email Address In The VIP Club

We’ve added a step-by-step guide to our website to answer one of the questions we get the most about the VIP Club: How do I change my email address?

We get it. Over time, your email can change as you move, switch Internet providers, update your computer and mobile phone, etc. Some folks said they were having trouble finding the spot under their VIP Club profile to change the email address associated with their account.

We now have a page that maps out the process, including screenshots with the instructions.

To help you get started, I’ve included the initial steps of the process in the image you see here. You’ll first need to log in to your VIP Club account. Once you’ve done that, you’ll see the main links along the left side of the page. Click on the “Account Management” link at the top and that will take you to a page with several options.

The first one listed is “Change Email,” which walks you through the remaining steps you’ll follow. But the last link on the list – Update Profile – also will take you to the spot where you will key in your new address and then click the “Submit” button to save your changes.

It’s a quick and easy process with either link. And having the correct contact information in your account is important because if you win a prize in one of our VIP Club drawings, we’ll use the email and telephone number you’ve provided to contact you!

Mobile App Update Fixes Ticket-Scanning Snag That Impacted Some Android Phones

An update to our mobile app is now live in the Google Play Store® that fixes a glitch some players with Samsung® phones were having when they tried to scan a lottery ticket to see if they’d won a prize.

The technical snag appeared to only impact Samsung Galaxy S21 mobile phones with the Android 12 operating system. 

The players involved said they couldn’t use the lottery’s mobile app to check the results of their tickets. That was the only app function impacted on those phones - all other features on the lottery app, including players' ability to enter tickets into promotions, continued as normal.

The update is now live for Android devices and in most cases, if you already have the app (it’s called the Iowa Lottery’s LotteryPlus), you’ll get the new version automatically. But if you’ve shut off automatic updates, you can go into the Google Play Store and manually update it.

Please note that if you have an Android device and you'd saved an ePlayslip in the app, you may need to re-create it and save it again after the update is made.

Technical Snag Preventing Ticket Checking On Mobile App For Players With This Phone

We’re working on an update to our mobile app to fix a snag that players with a certain type of smart phone are having when they try to check the results of their tickets.

The technical glitch only appears to impact Samsung® Galaxy S21 mobile phones with the Android 12 operating system. We began hearing from players about the snag after a recent update to those phones.

The players involved say they can’t use the lottery’s mobile app to check the results of their tickets. The difficulty is only impacting the ticket-checking function on those phones -- all other features on the lottery's app, including players' ability to enter tickets into lottery promotions, continue to function as normal.

We’re working on an update to resolve the issue, but we don’t yet have a release date. With any technology, updates and changes over time can cause unexpected tangles. But we know you like the convenience of the mobile app and we want to have all the features on it up and running!

Ticket Checking Is Working Again On The Lottery’s Mobile App!

Good news on the convenience front: The ticket-checking function is working again on the Iowa Lottery’s mobile app! So, you CAN now use the app to check the results of your lotto, scratch and InstaPlay tickets.

That particular app feature had been down for the last couple days after a system update over the weekend. On Sunday, the Iowa Lottery transitioned to a new central gaming system, which links lottery equipment statewide in real time. It’s a huge project that only happens about once every 10 years here in Iowa. And with any update like that, there will be tweaks and adjustments needed after go-live.

That was the case with ticket-checking on the lottery’s mobile app. We know our players love the convenience of being able to use the app to check the results of their tickets from wherever they are, whether they’re at home or on the go. And we’re glad the right adjustments have been made so that function is back up today!

So, what was the lottery system upgrade, and why was it made? Like any electronic device, the equipment used to sell and cash lottery tickets needs to be replaced over time. The central gaming system replaced on Sunday had been in use since 2011 and the lottery’s contract for it expired this year. We’ve been working on the new system for about 2½ years. 

At the store level, the update means that the previous red lottery terminals have been replaced with new black-and-white terminals. The ticket printers and self-checkers in stores also have been replaced.

And here’s another upgrade you’ll notice the next time the jackpot in Mega Millions® or Powerball® gets really big: The lighted jackpot signs in stores around the state now have the ability to display amounts of $1 billion or more. Our old signs “only” displayed amounts up to $999 million, so when the jackpots climbed higher than that, they couldn’t keep up. But now they can!

Mobile App Update: Fix Is Live For Some Ticket-Scanning Issues

An update has just been made to our mobile app that fixes a glitch some players were having when they tried to scan a lottery ticket to see if they’d won a prize.

The update is now live for both Apple and Android devices, and in most cases, if you already have the app on your device (it’s called the Iowa Lottery’s LotteryPlus), there’s nothing you need to do to get the update. But if you’ve shut off automatic updates, you’ll need to enable that for the app so you can get the latest version.

This update has been a long time coming, and it admittedly was a frustrating process to determine what needed to be done to fix the glitch. Not all players were experiencing it, and those that were had dozens of different types of devices, software versions and carriers. The only universal theme is that those having the difficulty primarily appeared to have Android devices.

We also had to make sure that in making this fix, we didn’t inadvertently create a problem in the process players use on the app to enter tickets into our VIP Club drawings.

After a lot of trial and testing, the app update has now been pushed live in the Google Play Store® and Apple iTunes Store®. Please note that if you had saved an ePlayslip in the app, you’ll need to re-create it and save the ePlayslip again once the update has been made on your device.

We’ve had a lot of online discussions with folks as we investigated the update. Thank you to those who shared details with us about the devices and software versions you were using. Your input truly helped in this process!

Hey, I Bought Tickets At Different Stores And They Have The Same Numbers

This is another take on Pick 3/Pick 4 questions, after the blog entry we posted about the games last month.

This time around, the question comes from a man who bought Pick 4 tickets at two different stores and noticed that his plays both had the same numbers. He thought that meant there was something wrong.

In reality, Pick 3, Pick 4, and our other lotto games are specifically designed to allow for repeat numbers. It’s a built-in security feature of the games. And in Pick 3 and Pick 4, where only the numbers 0-9 are available to play, repeats can happen more often.          

I’ve included an image here that the man sent to us of his Pick 4 tickets. They were purchased on the same day at two different locations. The man thought that meant all other possible combinations in the Pick 4 game had been purchased between the tickets he bought, and that was why he got two tickets with the same numbers. But that’s not the case. 

You can see in the image that the plays on his tickets are marked as “EP.” That means they’re easy-pick plays where the lottery terminal at the location involved randomly selected the numbers. So, the same numbers could end up being printed simultaneously on tickets at different locations or within a short period of time as occurred for this player. Or, it could be a considerable length of time between that exact combination being printed. That’s the very nature of random plays.

Duplicate combinations in the games demonstrate that they’re working correctly. There would be something wrong if no repeat combinations were issued.

The only way to ensure that you as a player do not receive duplicate plays is to pick your own numbers.

There are hard-copy pla slips available in many retail locations where lottery tickets are sold, and another really handy way to choose your own numbers is to create an ePlayslip using the Iowa Lottery’s mobile app.

Definitely Fireworks Of A Different Kind -- All Predicted By Her Horoscope

I love everything about this story: The fireworks show, the fact that she didn’t play her ticket until afterwards, and the fortune that came true. Especially the fortune!

All those details belong to Susan Legge of Granger, who claimed a $30,000 lottery prize Monday. She won one of the top prizes in the “Amazing Money” scratch game.    

Susan said she bought her winning ticket on the Fourth of July as she was on her way to watch a local fireworks show. She didn’t play the ticket until she got home that night and said she didn’t trust what she was seeing at first. So she handed the ticket to her daughter to double-check it.

Susan said that her daughter scanned the ticket with the Iowa Lottery’s mobile app and it showed that she had indeed won a $30,000 prize. But wanting one more source to verify it, they rushed back to the Casey’s store in Granger where she’d bought her ticket and had it scanned on the lottery terminal there, which also showed that she’d won the game’s top prize.

And here’s where the fortune comes in: Susan said she’d read an online horoscope the day before that predicted something good would come her way, that she should expect a miracle. And then she bought a winning lottery ticket. She said she’s still stunned!

She said she plans to use her winnings for a down payment on a house and to upgrade her camper.

Congratulations, Susan! Now maybe the rest of us will have to take a closer look at our horoscopes, too!

New Step In the Process When You Check A Ticket Using Our Mobile App

An update being made today to our mobile app allows you to clear out the results of the previous ticket before starting to scan another one.

We’re making the change after input from some players who said this additional step could help make the process of checking tickets on the app more clear for them. This update is designed to do just that.

So now, when you check a ticket on the mobile app and have had a chance to review the results, you’ll click the “Clear Scan Results” button to remove that information from the screen. You then can proceed with checking the next ticket, and since you’ve cleared the results of the previous one, you’ll be starting with a clean slate. We hope this change will be a positive!

We did the behind-the-scenes work on the app, and I’m happy to let you know we’ve come through with it: The results screen for winning tickets is now green! It definitely draws a distinction between winning and nonwinning tickets, helping to make it even more obvious when you’ve won a prize!

‘Tiny Home, Big Wins!’ Promotion: Your Chance To Join The Trend!

We’ve got a chance for you to be part of the tiny-home movement.

Whatever you call it – a tiny home, a small house or a not-so-big house – there’s no doubt that this trend has taken root all across the country. We’ve had fun brainstorming ways to give our players a chance to join in, and that led to today’s debut of a promotion that offers a custom-built tiny home as the grand prize.

Here’s several tips for scanning your ticket on our app: 

• Make sure all of the security coating is removed from the “Scratch 2 Cash” box on the front of your ticket;
• Use the “light” feature within the app to illuminate the area while scanning;
• Move the ticket around so that your phone’s camera can detect the square barcode;
• Hold the ticket farther away from your phone’s camera so it can focus better on the barcode.

If your eligible ticket won’t scan – for whatever reason – you can enter it manually on the app. Just type the ticket’s numbers in the boxes using your phone’s keyboard.

Can I enter tickets in both the Secret Santa cash drawing and the Not So Secret Santa cash drawing?

Yes, of course! You can only enter each ticket once into either, the Secret Santa drawing or the Not So Secret Santa drawing. However, if you are entering multiple tickets you can mix it up and enter some of your tickets into the Secret Santa drawing and some of them into the Not So Secret Santa drawing. Remember, the Not So Secret Santa cash prize amount is always listed, while the Secret Santa cash prize amount is not. The Secret Santa cash prize may be greater than, less than or the same as the Not So Secret Santa prize – you’ll find out when we draw the winners for that drawing period. 

How do I reset my VIP Club account password on the app?
Unfortunately, you aren’t able to reset your VIP Club account password on the app at this time. This is something we’re working on for future Play It Again® promotions, but for now, you’ll have to reset your password via our website on your laptop or desktop computer or your tablet.

Can I register for a VIP Club account on the app?
Unfortunately, no. You’ll need to register for a VIP Club account on a laptop or desktop computer. Then once you’re fully registered, you’ll be able to login to your VIP Club account on the app.
